review 1: this is a good story about people trapped under Hitler's Germany. Like so many of us today, the atrocities of the government were too far away from everyday lives to worry about until suddenly it was their life. They were in fear of violent death, unable to do anything about it but try and survive. At least on a personal level, the lead character tries. The extensive descriptions, especially at the beginning made settling into the book difficult. The story once it got going, holds the readers attention and covers the time period well. The characters are relatable and any reader of historical fiction will enjoy a different view of the civilian side of WWII
review 2: One of the characters in this book says, "War makes victims all." I recently watched a doc
... moreumentary on non-violence, and this book gave me more food for thought. It encourages much thought about the continued violence in the world, and America's place in it. The world is not an either/or place, but much more complicated than the various versions of history. Although a novel, the author uses the experiences of her extended family which experienced WW II as a Christian family in Germany. The ending was a bit contrived, but on a whole very thought provoking. less

It left me with a lot of questions and somewhat disappointed in the ending.
