review 1: Overall, the book was wonderful. Within the first few sentences, the author grabbed my attention with her terrific writing ability. However, knowing now that the original manuscript was cut and revised, I'm able to find peace with this novel. The ending of the story was exceptionally rushed and I found myself making note of at least six places where the author could have, and should have, chosen to end the novel. Regardless, it's was a chilling, harrowing tale but a telling one. Worth the read!
review 2: Brutally depressing plot set in WWII Germany. Interesting story line, kept me interested, mostly. Worth the read if you're interested in war/holocaust stories. I would give it a higher rating but the writing was at times repetitive. There are over 40 reference
... mores to Christine's stomach, and I found myself skipping over entire pages devoted to describing the scene in unnecessary, wordy detail. Many parts of the book seemed shallow and underdeveloped- for instance the main love story. It's a childhood crush, really. I found it hard to sympathize with the main character as the author spent pages upon pages describing her 'suffering,' while she could have spent more time developing other characters. Overall, I would recommend this book if only for the unique perspective of German citizens during WWII. less
