review 1: Unfortunately I found it a lot boring. I just can't even with books about magical prodigies anymore. It probably would have been a much more interesting book if it was from Savin's perspective and not Gair, who is a wet blanket. Also negative points for fairy princess crushes and killing off the love interest (and like, one of the only people of colour in the book!) in the name of character growth.
review 2: This was a well written fantasy story - magic, persecution, conspiracy, a troubled hero, an evil villain. It's an easy read and I enjoyed it, but it didn't spark my imagination particularly, I think mostly because there were a lot of familiar fantasy plot elements and I would have enjoyed seeing something different. Still, it's only the first of a series,... more and the author may have twists up her sleeve for the rest of the story. less
