review 1: I felt like I was reading a cross between Jane Austen and Dick Frances. We have the star-crossed, high-minded lovers Robert and Charlotte and their sometimes friend-and-benefactor, sometimes enemy Phillip, all trying to create happy futures--the lovers want to wed, Philip wants to be rich. The story is set in the 18th century, reminiscent of the Austen comedy of manners. Toss in a lot about horse racing and breeding, the continental wars, and the American colonies as well and you have an epic story with lots of fascinating material. I thought the characters at times were a bit stupid in resolving difficulties but it carried the plot along.
review 2: This book had a lot of potential and it had a lot of interesting detail but when it was time for everything to st... moreart coming together, it sucked. The story went in too many directions and there wasn't a satisfying conclusion (it seemed a little abrupt IMHO). It did drag when talking about horses (but the detail was great if you care about such a thing). The Drake family saga was annoyingly intertwined with Charlotte and Robert and I didn't like the flipflopping of brides. The fight between Drake and Robert was pointless and ruined a friendship, Charles shooting Drake's brother was out of nowhere and the marriage between Charlotte and Drake was pointless except to get Charlotte out of her terrible uncle's house. I wish the author would have taken more time with the ending it seemed after Robert and Drake's fight, she kind of gave up. less
