Oh my god, this is straight out of the episode of Black Mirror with Alex Lawther. The US Department of Justice charged an Ohio man, Phillip R. Durachinsky, this week with using spyware to watch people and listen to their conversations via their computers. He’s also charged with identity theft using malware called “Fruitfly.”
“In some cases, the malware alerted Durachinsky if a user typed words associated with pornography,” says the DOJ press release.
If you haven’t watched it yet, go to Netflix right now and watch the Black Mirror episode, “Shut Up and Dance” in season three. Get ready to be blown away by the twist ending, and then read the news release again, and then put tape over your webcam and mute your microphone. Or may you should just throw your laptop in the recycle bin.
There are probably more alleged evildoers like Durachinsky out there. If you really need your computer, update your malware definitions today. Have you taped over your webcam?
