review 1: 3/10Dopo innumerevoli tentativi negli scorsi anni, finalmente riesco a finirlo. Pesante, prolisso, insistente fino al fastidio su determinati concetti che particolarmente stanno a cuore all'autore e in generale molto influenzato dal periodo e dall'occasione (pubblicazione a puntate su un giornale) per la quale è stato scritto. I personaggi sono macchiette, l'esotismo è ricercato in gran parte con termini specifici sconosciuti ai più e l'emozione con espressioni roboanti. Assoltamente non adatto per ragazzi, morirebbero di noia a pagina cinque (parlo per esperienza personale, eh). Tuttavia, non gli do di meno perché qualche guizzo di interesse è riuscio a strapparmelo qui e lì, segno che in qualche modo ha tenuto fede al suo scopo.
review 2: A fun read set... more in British India. Tremal-Naik, a tiger hunter has his life turned upside down when he encounters a beautiful woman in the heart of the Black Jungle. Though Salgari's India may not be completely accurate, he filled the novel with intriguing characters and enough action to keep me turning the pages. Though I still prefer the Sandokan adventures, this is a fun prequel, and, like the Tigers of Mompracem, the story is the classic man meets beautiful woman saves her from... Salgari was from Verona and rewrote Romeo and Juliet several times against a variety of exotic backdrops. The subsequent titles, The Pirates of Malaysia, The Two Tigers and the King of the Sea are different of course, there's less melodramtic romance and more action. less
