review 1: Not my favourite of Emily Barr's novels, but a good read nonetheless. In some ways this was a return to some of her earlier themes - assuming a false identity, running away from a former life - and it reminded me of her novel Baggage, but the back story was very different and quite dark. I wasn't convinced by the ending but the descriptions of Cornwall, London and Venice were very evocative and the plot was intriguing.
review 2: Not bad but totally lacks believability! Firstly that her mother would demand that they do what they do to begin with, and secondly that she'd go on the run all those years later without telling anyone anything (and then use her passport as a clue). Oh, and thirdly that she'd go to Venice after the photos in her mother's kitchen had bee
... moren on display for all to see, since she was so paranoid about being tracked down. Apart from a storyline that exhibits more holes than my knitting attempts, it was ok. Nothing special, but ok. less

Good efforts. A book I enjoyed escaping into, even if the story was dark in places
