Headline Review
review 1: I’ve previously read and reviewed some Emily Barr novels and I find this book to be very much in the same genre and style of writing and positively so.If you are used to my reviews you will know that I hate ‘chick-lit’ and happily the writing that Barr produces is always darker and more sinister than anything appealing to the generic and lighter and more mainstream lady-literature audience. This book deals with family ties, maternal bonds and a constant search for identity - although it is called 'The Sisterhood' maybe 'Twisted Sisters' would be far more apt. It isn’t twee or tongue in cheek and deals with a few characters who have more than a dark side about them, all steadily revealed as the book unwinds. Put it this way, when, after a few short chapters, one of t... morehe main narrators sleeps with a transsexual, the reader steadily gathers that general norms and rules are being challenged. This is typical Barr style where she takes on the concept of normality and bends truths and realities to shake things up a little and play with the reader’s expectations. The book is exceedingly easy to read and the plotline definitely made me motivated to read more. The book took me the best part of a reading week to get through it and again, in knowing how Barr writes in a bittersweet way, I found myself almost cringing as I anticipated the development of the ending as I realised things were not going to go automatically to plan.I would recommend this book as I would recommend other stuff by Barr to anyone who seeks something a little different and even more macabre from their everyday read. Barr presents a world where nothing is standard and perfect. Her imperfect characters are realistic and interesting to me and, if you like things to be a little more distorted at times, then you will like them too.Another highly recommended Emily Barr saga that is perfect holiday, travel or beach reading.
review 2: I have not read Emily Barr before and this book would not inspire me to read any more of her titles. This novel is about a young French girl Helen with English mother and French father and her search for her half sister who she has just discovered existed when she was snooping through her mothers personal papers. The woman she believes to be her half sisters is named Liz and she lives in London and she is going through a crisis which is revealed almost at the beginning of the story. The plot is over worked and implausible based on Helen being able to locate her half sister through an internet forum. The story is too long with totally unbelieveable characters, and the Epilogue is laughable. less

Hugely readable and with a good twist at the end. Couldn't put it down, so raced through it!

An engaging story and I liked the fact that I couldn't guess as to what was coming next.

It got a little bothersome towards the middle. But otherwise an okay read.
