review 1: I felt that Bazelon did an excellent job of presenting multiple points of view on a very complex topic. Bullying tends not to be straight forward. There are always many sides to the same story. She does her research well and presents it through a mix of stories, facts, and statistics. I appreciated that she told the stories on the individual levels, but also looked at ways that school and communities could approach reducing bullying. She points out that it is never in the power of just one person. Parents, teachers, administrators, students, and community members all need to be involved. We need to teach our children to make good choices even when it is hard and to be empathetic to those around them. We never quite know what struggles they may be going thr... moreough.
review 2: A fairly nuanced look at school bullying that focuses on three students - one of them a well known suicide - and looks at the mechanics of bullying both IRL and online, and the factors that bullies and the bullied have in common. Unique in not seeking to demonize children, point fingers at schools or parents, but in looking for answers. The chapters about interventions with evidence behind them were really enlightening. Worth a read if you work in a school or are interested in the topic. less
