The Curse
review 1: Loved this one! Emily Bold does a good job building a solid foundation without dragging out too long before the fun really gets going. Poor Sam feels like her life is just one disappointment after another. When she's struggling in her history class, her teacher suggests an exchange program in Scotland. Since her cousin Ashley stays with her family over the summer, Sam decides to jump at this rare opportunity. She isn't looking forward to another summer with Ashley. Sam's greeting to Scotland is following the luck she had in the States when she's almost run over by a motorcyclist and they don't even offer an apology. Her host dad picks her up and briefly describes some of the area. Immediately Sam is drawn into the mystery and myths. As she's traveling around the co... moreuntry side on different tourist outings, she meets the strangest boy. She doesn't know how strange Payton really is, but she's about to find out.
review 2: This is a story of an old Scottish clan: Payton, Sean, and Blair McLean, all of whom are under a curse. They are unable to feel emotion, they are unable to get injured, they will never die. Enter Samantha Watts, descendant of the Cameron clan, which had been in a blood feud with the McLeans since the 18th century. Unlike most paranormal stories written today, this one does not focus so intensely on the romance that evolves, and actually has an interesting plot, and subplots. It delves into the characters back stories with flashbacks to the past, and vivid descriptions in stories the characters tell or letters written that the characters read.Emily Bold is definitely on her way to the top in her writing, as she knows how to hold your attention with detail, but not so much detail that you get bored and want to skip ahead. She paints a beautiful picture of the scenery and is very able to play with your emotions when letting you get to know the characters. The only glaringly obvious writing no-no I found in the book was that she 'dated' the story, by putting present day actors names in the story (ie. "The cover of the magazine read "Brangelina wedding, at last?") eventually, when this book is read, people are not going to have a clue who "Brangelina" is, so it's better just to make up a character/place rather than stick in one that actually exists. Somethings that I noticed that some fine editing would take care of would be:1) The over-use of exclamation marks. I don't think there is a single page of the book where one isn't used. It's like they're screaming throughout the story. 2) There are a few things that get lost in the translation, and some misspellings, which may be because of the translation. Other than that, I was thoroughly enraptured by the story. I've already ready the 2nd book (Breath of Yesterday) and cannot wait for the 3rd book to be translated. I can see Emily Bold doing well as an author, if she keeps going at the rate she's going now. less

My first exposure to The Highlander story. A good supernatural YA romance.

Nice escape story. I have a thing for Scotland so I'm highly biased.
