review 1: This is a good, outsider's view of modern, westernized societies. It was written around late 19th/early 20th century, and contains a general critique of western civilization. It helps us appreciate what was important to premodern people, and how we have forgotten and neglected those important truths. For example, one complaint is that we think too much, meaning we analyze and judge things and people instead of enjoying life for what it is. People were already going to see silent motion pictures at the time.Interestingly, Tuiavii was a Christian so he had no problem with the Bible's teachings. Like Gandhi, he saw western Christians as hypocrites. Be forewarned that the book might have been written by a German instead of by a Samoan chief named Tuiavii. Even so, the person h... moread been to Samoa, and would likely have been able to understand and describe the typical Samoan perspective. If you want to be assured that this is a 100 percent authentic record rather than a possible pseudonymous account, you will probably want to avoid this.
review 2: Esta obra escrita antes da 1ª Guerra Mundial, com base nos pensamentos de um nativo das Ilhas Samoa que viveu no mundo ocidental, é bastante interessante. Dá a visão inversa relativamente à civilização. Porque os povos que são considerados mais primitivos, têm uma simplicidade no modo de encarar o mundo e a vida, que os ocidentais já perderam há muito.Causa estranheza ver o nosso mundo ocidental caricaturado deste mudo, mas faz reflectir sobre o nosso modo de vida apressado, sobre as prioridades do Homem ocidental, a devoção ao progresso e o esquecimento de Deus, da Natureza e dos princípios mais simples. less
