review 1: I thought this was a really unique book. Each chapter was told from two points of view (Laura and Vincent), and they played off of each other well. It's set in the mid 1920s-early 1930s, which isn't typically a favorite time period for me, but I liked it anyway. The only part that I question is whether the portrayal of Laura was legitimate...was it possible for an unwed mother with a child born out of wedlock in the 1920s to have the life she had (not a great one but not destitute either) in a small town, where everyone knew everyone else? In a big city, I would have said yes, but a small town? I'm not so sure, but I still really liked the story and think it's worth a read!
review 2: I was excited to find this title, which is fiction but is based on the life of
... more real-life poet Edna Saint Vincent Millay. Robuck does a great job with character development, and the chapters alternate their viewpoints, which lends interest. I found the mob scene close to the conclusion a bit overblown, but I suppose it is possible that people might confront a fallen woman publicly in the nineteen thirties. This was my parents' era, when they were young marrieds with young children, so the period holds a unique fascination for me. It is amazing to reflect on how permissive certain elements of society were at the time, reminiscent of the 1960's. Definitely a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Millay's life, or this time period. Robuck is developing into a fine writer, in my opinion. The author graduated from the college where I work as a librarian, and I have heard her speak in person on several occasions: she is an excellent speaker, very thoughtful. less
