review 1: A good fantasy, but much darker and more somber than the cover leads you to think. Kate, the orphaned daughter of a master carver, is a very good carver herself but not the best negotiator. She sets the plot in action when she foolishly agrees to trade her shadow to a white witch in return for a wish. The witch, Linay, needs her shadow to fuel his revenge against the city that drove his sister to her death.
review 2: Pretty good YA novel set in the long ago with the reality of witches and superstitions about talisman. The writing is quite good and you quickly come to care for Plain Kate.
