review 1: The friendship between the three central characters was truly beautiful and I can honestly say that it was what hooked me and kept me reading. I cared about these characters and wanted to know what would happen to them, but I agree with a previous reviewer that there were a bunch of background stuff that I would have liked to know more about. Also, apart from the fact that the whole "White Hand" concept freaked me out I didn't quite understand the "answer" to it… will need to re-read that part again someday. And then there was a fourth character that appeared really late in the story and while I did found him very likable I also wished he had shown up earlier so that the whole romance thing didn't feel so rushed.
review 2: Otter is the daughter of the village
... more Binder, the person who binds the dead and keeps them away from the civilization of the living. Otter expects to follow in her mother's footsteps, as children do in her community. Her dearest friends, Cricket, who is in training to be a storyteller, and Kestrel, who will be a ranger, one of those women who patrols the borders and keeps the people safe from the dead, have clearly defined roles and a certain future. Otter does not, as she learns when her mother, Willow, rejects her and selects a binder apprentice from another village. Willow seems to be losing her touch with sanity, and Otter does not understand why. But it will be up to Otter, ultimately, to save her people and to undo a terrible deed, ages old. This beautifully constructed fantasy novel for teens is mesmerizing, but it is creepy, and falls almost more in the horror camp than in the fantasy camp. It gave me nightmares. Junior high, up. less
