review 1: This was really quite moving. The exploration of mental illness from the daughter's perspective, having to deal with taking care of herself, her younger sister and her mother during the bad times made you feel sympathetic towards Lucy. The other great thing about this book is that the mother character, the one with the mental illness, is not portrayed as wholly bad. She is also sympathetic and struggling, and the loss of her mother, coupled with money issues can send her on a bad streak. This is not unknown, many people can connect to this.
review 2: Good story about kids dealing with their mother's bipolar illness. Poignant for sure - it was hard to read about children having such dreams of success but also having to live in a make believe world in order to su
... morervive their real one. Access to good healthcare and followup assistance is not in this picture, which is all too often the case.I sort of found the absconding with the RV to be a little far fetched, and the final dramatic scene of escaping the hospital was way out there. But it provided some excitement. This book does shine a much needed light on the prevalence and challenges of mental illness. less
