review 1: I loved the book which was a Goodreads win. When I started reading it I noticed that it was one of the selections for the best historical fiction and the time period was 1862. Rosetta was the daughter of a farmer with an older sister but no brothers. Her mother had lost four babies and they had all been male. So Rosetta was the son her dad never had. She worked the farm and was capable of doing anything a man could do. She married a fellow who she had an eye on only weeks before he went off to war. It was only a matter of days when she realized she could not handle being left behind mending socks and similar women's work and decided to join him and enlist as well. The book was based on women who served on both sides during the war. It's was beautifully wri... moretten. review 2: My 4th Tuesday Book Club read this book and I am so sorry I had to miss the discussion. (Especially since I had recommended this one) I really enjoyed this author's use of words. So many passages that really were so spot on with what you would think would have been the language of the time. This language, made the characters so real for me. Rosetta was so much stronger than I could be, but I admire the conviction and love she had for "her man". I didn't want to leave her, so therefore a 5 star rating. less
