review 1: Josie speaks all kinds of languages but, as she tries to navigate her way through romantic relationships and her sister's impending engagement, she finds that the language of love may be the most difficult of all. Initially, this seemed like a clever, engaging book with a unique narrator but Josie's quirkiness rapidly became grating rather than charming. She also sounded incredibly young and immature, and her behavior often reflected that and made me irritated at her failure to consider the consequences of her words and actions. The behavior of some of the adults, specifically Josie's sister Kate, also came off as incredibly immature and possibly damaging. Kate got engaged and promptly began to constantly lecture Josie about her appearance and then manipulated and blackmai... moreled her into changing it. This is not healthy, supportive behavior but it was never properly questioned or dealt with, even as it got more and more extreme. Finally, the eventual romantic relationship was both obvious from the first few chapters and not particularly appealing--there was little chemistry between Josie and her love interest and the "childhood best friends" trope is both worn out and unrealistic. It was also frustrating to see Josie have conversation after conversation with her female friends about boys, crushes, and nothing else. Recommended only for those who can deal with a serious dose of "quirkiness".
review 2: The book I read for 2nd quarter was Love and other Foreign Words by Erin McCahar. This book was a very interesting read, the main character Josie is very smart, and she is amazed by languages, words, the really meaning verses how most people use them. She views everyone has having their own languages, or groups of people speaking the same. For example in her eyes there is an elderly people language, “omigod” language for teenagers. Jose is a junior in high school but also takes classes at the local college, she finds herself having to translate and speak many different languages, but the one she has the most trouble understanding is the language of love. When her sisters is preparing to get married to someone how all wrong for her in Josie opinion, Josie finds herself lost. Even more when Josie thinks she maybe falling in love with a much unexpected candidate. McCahar purpose in writing this novel was to show the difference in one person to other. We all might speak English but there is so much of a difference coming from a sixteen year old from a 72 year old. I never really thought of myself that way but the more you break it down think about it is very relevant in my life. I speak how I am most comfortable with my friends, but I would never talk to a teacher like that so I need to translate into more of an appropriate tone. The book makes you realize if you find yourself having to translate too much you need to be true to yourself and find people that can handle the raw cut. The theme of this book is to be yourself. Josie is constantly being told she should get contacts and stop wearing her glasses, to wear makeup, or to date the boy she doesn’t really like. She stand up for herself and doesn’t let other people push her around. Josie will translate for people but she with never change or lose her native language. This book was written has a narrative with a first person point of view. This book was in mostly chorological order with flash backs and memories very nicely mixed in. The style of this book was very fitting to this plot. Something would happen and we wouldn’t really get the full grasp of it until she would be telling to story to her mother or friends, this lead it to be slightly confusing at time but also gave us time to imagine what the outcome was while in the next chapter it would give us the answer. I really did like this book, it changed the way I look at my own personal language and other people around me. This was a very cute book about an awkward girl journey through big changes in her life, having to adapt to, and finding her true self in all of the mess. I recommend this book to those who like teenage real life, with a hint of romantics. less
