review 1: I really liked this book about 4 young Israeli men and how their deep friendship both helps them and hinders them in their personal development over the years. One criticism--the writing didn't seem to flow very well. I wonder if that is because I read an English translation of the original Hebrew or just the author's style?Still, I'm looking forward to reading the author's other novel, since he is very good at characterizations and his story was very gripping.
review 2: I picked up Eshkol Nevo’s second novel, World Cup Wishes, for two reasons. Ever since childhood I’ve been consumed by a passion for soccer. I’ve scoured bookstores from here to New Jersey, often in vein, to find hidden treasure: good books about soccer. The second reason? In a quest to
... more soak up as much as I can about Israeli culture and society, I’ve taken to devouring Israeli novels.Nevo, a young novelist who’s the grandchild of former Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, could be on his way to joining the titans of Israeli literature. His second novel, which hit Israeli bookshelves in 2007 and was translated 2010, is one for the boys. The story opens with a band of four childhood friends, now in their late twenties, kicking back as they watch the 1998 World Cup final. They decide, after the game ends, to write down three wishes they hope to accomplish by the next World Cup in four years’ time. They then folded up the papers and stowed them away—they would be opened only after the referee blew the final whistle of the 2002 world cup final. The book, told from the perspective of Yuval, one of the four, follows the friends through a series of unlikely twists and turns over the next four years. It’s an interesting premise and Nevo skillfully constructs the plot to compel the reader to keep turning one more page. A legal document at the story’s beginning condemning one of the four lends the story a sense of foreboding. It also makes to the reader begin to question, what is real and what is made up? While the plot seemed too much like a soap opera at times, it raises interesting questions about the meaning of friendship and loyalty. Do close friendships hold us back, or help us grow? The novel only tangentially relates to soccer, but I felt that, by the book’s end, I had learned something not just about the four friends, but also about myself. less
