review 1: Breaking Stalin’s Nose begins introducing Sasha and his father, who live in the Soviet Union commune with 40 other Russian people. Sasha is a ten-year-old boy who loves communism and idolizes Comrade Stalin who is their leader. His mother is dead, but also idolizes his father who works for state security. Sasha’s father warns him bad things may happen, and sure enough his father is arrested in the middle of the night after being turned in. He then finds himself homeless and starts to realize how harsh the communist conditions actually are. He realizes it’s time to take a stand and doesn’t choose to join Young Pioneers. He runs to Lubyanka where is father is imprisoned, and their Sasha meets a women who gives him a place to stay. This is a more mature fiction book m... moreade for middle school.
