review 1: An easy read, directed at children. Follows a boy named Hal, as his lust for a dog grows and his parents finally cave in and let him have one - not telling him that it was on hire for the weekend, not a permanent adoption. His mother discreetly gives he dog back to the agency, hoping Hal won't notice - but he does. After some time spent being miserable, Hal plans an exciting adventure to take back Fleck (the hired dog) and escape his parents.
review 2: Absolutely wonderful!! If you love dogs you will LOVE this story. This story grabbed me from the first chapter. I couldn't stop reading it. A delightful story about a boy who wants a dog badly. However his parents are dreadful and have a sterile house with nothing living in it and don't want a messy dog. The mo
... morether is a caricature of a rich emotionally devoid person. The father is so busy making money and notices very little. The parents finally get the boy a dog, but it is only a "rental" dog. When they dog goes back the adventure begins. There are lots of other supportive characters and all the pieces of the story fit together so nicely. The ending is adorable with all the ends tied up without feeling forced. I especially liked how the children's journey took them to so many places. One of them was a monastery honoring Saint Roch, the Patron Saint of Dogs. This makes a great tie in since I teach at a Catholic school. A perfect read aloud for Gr 3-5. I loved this book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDEDChildren's Books Of The Year 2013 - Ages 9 to 12 less
