review 1: This is a story about a boy who really wants a dog however his rich parents do not want to give him one as they think the dog will ruin their expensive home. His parents find out about a pet renting scheme and rent him a dog as they think he will get bored of it quickly. The boy is unaware that the dog will be returned and bonds with it. The boy, Hal, then plans to run away with the dog. Hal’s wealthy parents offer a reward to help find him. I like this book as I think lots of children can relate to it having pets of their own. This could be linked in with a literacy lesson e.g. getting children to create a persuasive leaflet about helping dog charities. To children thinking about each character children could rewrite a short story from the dog’s point of view. The book... more contains various locations throughout Hal’s adventure; this could be linked in with a geography lesson to get children thinking about different ways of travelling and what effects these could have on the environment.
review 2: For some reason I hadn't been interested in reading this one--a book about a dog (dogs) seemed like a departure from Ibbotson's normal wonderfulness. But last night I picked it up and gave it a shot and I loved it. The story was delightful and sweet and in the end there was redemption and a home for everyone. What more could you want? (Besides for the back cover not to have said that Eva Ibbotson died at age 85, before the book was published...on the other hand, way to keep writing till the end!) less
