review 1: How funny that the last two books I loved are books intended for non-adults. One Dog and His Boy is a new favorite that I will read again and again. Not only is it funny in a very sarcastic adult way, it is well crafted. Every character in it is rounded, even the maid who appears minimally. Heads above the flat characters I have recently encountered in "adult" authors. And it is wonderfully plotted! The smallest things influence events. I want to reread it just to study her writing! This is the first time I have read Eva Ibbotson but it will not be the last.
review 2: One Dog and His Boy is a tale of a boy and a dog who were meant to be together. All Hal ever wanted was a dog but his mother refused because of the mess it might make, the scratch-marks on the fu
... morerniture, and the puddles on the floor. However, on Hal's 10th birthday he is allowed to choose a dog from Easy Pets, a rent-a-pet agency. Once he sees the odd-looking terrier, he knows he's found a friend for life but little does he know Fleck must be returned once the weekend ends. When Hal wakes up on Monday morning, Fleck is gone. This story is about the journey Hal takes to reunite with his best friend, Fleck. This book was one of North Carolina Children's Book Award's in 2013 and there are many activities that could be done using this book in language arts and social studies. For language arts, students could write letters to Hal's parents explaining why Hal is so upset with them or they could research the story of Greyfriars Bobby. Students could also investigate different dog breeds and determine their 'perfect dog' or they could create a dog care manual on being a great pet owner. For social studies, students could create and label a map of the escape of Hal, Pippa, and the dogs. They could include places visited, people they met, methods of travel, and the new homes of the dogs. less
