review 1: ****3.5 stars*****This was a sexy, quick PNR, and I really enjoyed it for the most part. My first impression of Remy was not pleasant; he's plastered at a frat party and sense his mate Mia, so he continues to down alcohol while ogling her across the room. Not impressive, buddy. When a bad situation for her has him coming to the rescue and getting all alpha-dog on his mate, it was part sexy-part disturbing given she's saving her virginity and never really said yes to him pouncing on her! Fast-forward 5 years later and Mia is a single mom raising a rather rowdy Lycan boy, dealing with all kinds of messed up issues. Struggling to make by, putting up with racial slurs due to her son's mixed race, handling his "demon" side that keeps popping up, and of course there's the e... moremotional blow of her worthless family of religious crazies who disowned her because of her pregnancy. So yeah, her life pretty much sucks other than her precious son, but when Remy's father gets wind of a lone Lycan outside their pack, her whole life is about to flip a 180!I loved the fact that Remy was as torn up about losing Mia as she was, and that they'd both tried to find each other. It made for such an intense moment when Mia was found and her "surprise" was discovered. My heart was racing for her as she was faced with what was really going on, and the fact that yes, she was missed and could have a real home for her and Jacques. It was tense between her and Remy at first, they both had a lot to work through and she had deep-seated feelings of low self-worth that continually popped up. At times it got a little monotonous because she was repeatedly feeling like Remy's actions were because he didn't want her, but at the same time I loved how he'd swoop in and make her feel loved. She SO deserved it!!! Remy was just one sweet but sexy beast, and I have to say I really liked the fact that he was a successful black man instead of the cookie-cutter rich white guy for the hero! The issues of his family's race versus her family's bigoted ideals and society's prejudice was a refreshing twist, and I loved that HIS family that embraced her no matter what and made her feel loved. I can't not mention Jacques in this review, because this kid was adorable!! Just picturing the little "pup" of a boy, with glowing eyes and a rambunctious temper, scampering around and taking in his world...it was priceless! I was kind of on the fence about the way the story wrapped up, because it was kind of lacking the wow factor. After Mia and Jacques managed to escape the danger that followed them, it meant for some big changes for them and it almost seemed like a "ho-hum, oh well" twist. I guess I was expecting more of a sure happily ever after, with smiling faces and a secure home for Mia and her new family. I just didn't feel that with the way things ended here, so it disappointed me after how much I enjoyed the rest of the book. Regardless, I did really like this sexy story and recommend it to PNR fans!
review 2: Usually with Eve Langlais books, I alternate between wiping the laughter tears from my eyes to fanning myself from the "heat" in the book. This one? I got to the end & thought, "That's it? Um, okay." This seems to be more of a set-up book - perhaps starting an Evil Doctor (okay, so he's not around anymore, but his cronies apparently are) conflict. Let me guess - he was going to work from an island....???? Oh wait - that's another book. less
