review 1: I'd give it 2.5 stars if that were possible...it was a bit more than okay but I didn't quite like it, although, it's probably not meant to be liked. The subject matter is compelling but I found the execution lacking. Why do some people dissent while others go along with the group no matter how disturbing the situation? Trying to discuss that topic in under 200 pages doesn't seem possible and, if this book is any indication, it is not, in fact, possible. Four examples of dissent are used to illustrate, well, I'm not sure what exactly they are used to illustrate since there isn't really a decisive, or even preliminary, conclusion reached. A conclusion wasn't actually necessary but without one, the book must stand on its arguments and the discussions and thoughts it evok... morees. I found the examples repetitive and the lack of discussion of the consequences that, inevitably, befell many other dissenters throughout history, including the loss of their lives, troubling. A few of the ideas were thought-provoking. The analysis of whether the conscience has a rational or emotive basis was interesting. Overall, I found the book to be choked by its own details.
review 2: Honestly, I want to give Mr. Press's writing style only 2 stars, but I gave the book 3 stars because I think the stories of the courageous people on the book are so important and I want readers to be exposed to their tales. If you like reading psychology textbooks or blogs of friends who drone on too long, you will love this book. If not, I swear you will find yourself caught up in the stories of what these "beautiful souls" endured, then falling asleep as the author rehashes the "why"s to death. Skim the beginning of each chapter, though. Doing what's right in the face of completely unknown but sure-to-be-terrifying repercussions is an important lesson for us all. less

Some interesting ideas that were never fully completed and brought together.
