The Women of the Real Downton Abbey

review 1: I was not at all sure I needed to read this book, but in fact, once I started I could not put it down. At first, it seemed rather plodding, I must admit, but then the author seems to hit her stride, and off we went, right through to the end. The initial hook is of course "the real Downton Abbey" story, but in fact the story is quite a bit more interesting than the TV soap opera (not a criticism of the series, simply recognition that real Brits are much, much weirder than their fictional counterparts). Even if you have no interest in the British aristocracy, you might still find this interesting as a document of social history, told from the point of view of one of the current generation of the aristocratic family that lives in Highclere Castle. Not as charming as Nancy Mit... moreford, but still a fascinating family saga, with a lot of famous people and events along the way.
review 2: Como fã da série televisiva "Downton Abbey", tive bastante curiosidade quando este livro foi lançado em Portugal. E enganam-se se estão à espera de um romance pois trata-se de um relato de vida de Lady Almina baseado em factos históricos, mais centrada na vida do Castelo de Highclere.É uma leitura interessante mas achei algumas partes muito descritivas e mais chatas, no entanto foi um bom retrato da época e onde pude conhecer mais das diferenças entre a classe dos "Senhores" e dos "Empregados".Óbvio que Lady Almina não deixa de ser uma mulher rica e mimada, cujo dinheiro nunca foi problema, no entanto acaba por ser mais do que isso, principalmente na sua preocupação em criar hospitais para os feridos da I Guerra Mundial, tendo sempre um papel muito activo e presente, e não apenas como financiadora. Apesar de o livro não ser o que eu estava à espera (um romance ficcionado) foi uma leitura bastante interessante, quer em termos históricos, quer culturais. less
