The Women of the Real Downton Abbey
review 1: Even for a die-hard "Downton Abbey" fanatic like me I was still thoroughly surprised and delighted by what Fiona Carnarvon unearthed in "Lady Catherine, the Earl, and the Real Downton Abbey." While it was compelling enough stuff to read about the whirlwind romance and marriage between the American-born beauty and fashion icon Catherine Wendell and Lord Porchester ("Porchy"), "the 6th Earl of Carnarvon," the real drama was the story about how Highclere castle survived throughout the years and became a symbol of strength, protection and resilience through two major world wars. Surprisingly heartbreaking as well, the way everyone in the story carried on with as much dignity as they could despite their circumstances, made it an inspirational read for me as ... morewell.
review 2: I love reading about this story. While I'm not major on reading biographies but this is interesting. This is about Lady Catherine and her marriage to Henry Herbert, Earl of Carnvarvon. Not George Herbert, who helped Howard Carter found Pharaoh Tut's tomb, but his son. I enjoyed reading about them and their marriage with the ups an downs with it. I really didn't know much about Catherine or Henry until I read this book. I must say it is a good book to read. less

A well written historical account without unneeded details of affairs, etc.
