The Women of the Real Downton Abbey
review 1: The REAL story of Highclere castle is as much fun (if not more) than the fictional world of Downton Abbey, which is shot in the castle. From Almina's (officially) mysterious parentage, to the Valley of Kings in Egypt, there are nearly as many twists as in any BBC serial. Written by the current Lady of Highclere, the book is clearly written from the perspective of privilege. The opening chapter detailing the clothing and guest list of Almina's wedding establishes the tone the book. But a good editor has reined in the endless lists that would be so important in that world, and so boring to those of us who will never have a ladies maid or a butler.

... moreth Lord Carnarvon's discovery of King Tut's tomb in Egypt are fascinating. The writer is the 8th and current Countess of Carnarvon and Almina was the 5th Countess of Carnarvon. Almina and her husband had a love story, and as the only and illegitimate child of the immensely rich Alfred de Rothschild, she helped Highclere Castle be solvent. She also volunteered Highclere as a hospital for wounded soldiers during WWI and was a very involved nurse and hospital administrator, offering the soldiers excellent care. Her father spent a fortune supporting the hospital. Lots of photos included. less
