review 1: I did not really get the point of introducing this con-man. I felt that there were other ways to teach Hulga a lesson on Pride. I did feel like the story introduced these characters as if they were going to play a key role in the story, but had the story just contained Hulga, her mother and the Bible sales man, it would have had the same effect. Now I wonder well what happened to the girl who was pregnant, and the other girl who wanted to get married by church, or the husband of Mrs. Freeman, was he still alive and farming?
review 2: Good Country People is a short story about a mother, who runs a rural farm in Georgia, and her one-legged daughter Hulga. In the story, the two women could not be more different from one another. Mrs. Hopewell is a traditional So
... moreuthern mama that wants only what she thinks is best for her daughter. However, her daughter, a P.H.D atheist wants exactly the opposite of anything that her mother wants. This short "slice of life" story is about a Bible salesman that wins over her mothers heart and pretends to want Hulga's as well. In reality he wants something quite different. I think that the best element of craft utilized in this as well as many other Flannery O'Connor stories is that of Voice. In this story O'Connor has an amazing way of writing in a deep South dialect. There are certain parts of dialogue written that are often very hard to decipher because it is written exactly how it would have been said with a middle Georgia accents in the mid twentieth century. O'Connor is also not shy about writing about sensitive subject that a lot of authors would have wanted to stay away from like racism and amputation. These subjects, namely racism, would have been prevalent in the time of O'Connor's writing, but not to many authors tackled then quite so bluntly as O'Connor. In this story she utilizes a very blunt to the point voice that often includes dialect writing. I think that the best lesson that you could teach a class is the art of writing in dialect. It is a very complicated way of writing that is often over looked. It is also a type of writing that is completely up to the author; there are no grammatical or spelling rules. Writing in dialect is all about the sounds and how to duplicate them on paper. In this story O'Connor's voice depicts very to the point writing in any way that she sees fit which amplifies her strong sense of voice. less

Brings you into the mind of a young man during major changes in the 1960's.
