review 1: This novel started a little slow and there were places that the conversations did not seem “true to life”. However, it then took off and kept me turning pages quickly. This was a very well researched book. WWII is one of my favorite time periods. The point of view, by the nurse who was a prisoner of war, was very unique. I experienced all of her painful trials and tribulations. And, believe me, there were plenty. Her experiences were so captivating that I had a hard time putting this book down.I am not sure that I even knew about the POW nurses. And as I was reading this story, I was researching. I love books that encourage a reader to find out more. This story also explores PTSD or battle fatigue, as it was known then.“No one gets off that easy. The human body determi... morened to survive is a hard thing to kill. The mind, though … it’s more fragile.”Do not miss this story. It is a page turner!4.5 out of 5 stars.reecaspieces.com
review 2: Never have I read a book that affected me so much. I read this one in a day, couldn't put it down. I don't remember the last time I cried while reading a book, but this one was gut wrenching. Margie's story of being held as a P.O.W. in Japan during WWll is truly a book everyone should read. The loss of her friends and fellow nurses will leave you chilled to the bone. The hardships and the treatment our P.O.W.s endured should not happen to anyone. Ms. Solomon makes a person feel as if they were there, in Bataan and Corriegidor marching right along side them. When you read of the starvation and the beatings and the cruelty that our troops and nurses endured, it is almost unbelievable, Ms. Solomon's description of the horrors and the brutality made me sick to my stomach. If you are a history or WWll buff this book is one not to miss. If this book doesn't have you reaching for a tissue, I will be surprised. less

I really appreciated this book because my mother was an Army nurse in the Philippines during WWI.
