review 1: A fascinating exploration into the history - and increasingly unnatural developments surrounding our breasts.I was hooked for a good couple of days as I learnt about puberty - and possible reasons behind the younger ages are girls are approaching it; chemicals - and the scary way they make it into our breasts - and our breast milk; breast feeding - from a couple of different angles; and cancer. I loved the information, and the way it was presented by Florence Williams. It was really accessible and easy to follow, which is something I need to keep me involved in this kind of book.An area I thought was lacking was that the book was geared in many ways toward informing the reader of the toxic load our breasts are subject to, but there was not a lot about ways we can increase ... moreour breast health, or decrease said load ... with an extra chapter or two in this direction it would have easily made five stars from me ;)
review 2: All in all, this was a pretty informative read. And that was why I read it in the first place so, mission accomplished!A few years ago my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was with her through all her treatments, which she got through brilliantly, and saw what she had to go through to fight this terrible disease. When I saw this book, I had to read it, if for nothing else, to get some small inkling of an idea why my mother was suddenly pulled into this awful situation. And, I have to say, this book is eye-opening, and I have some understanding of how (and maybe why) this happened. But it also led me to the conclusion that we can do better, and do more, to understand and fight back against breast cancer. Not only can we do better and do more, but we HAVE to. WE HAVE TO. less
