review 1: One of those rare short story collections where you have to finish one story and then wait a day or so to process the tale before you move on to the next. Marciano's people are all really interesting, but I didn't care for or about them very much. Maybe that's the inherent problem with a short story. You don't spend enough time getting to know a "person" before he or she has already moved out of your consciousness. Ultimately, a one night stand, literal or literary, just isn't very satisfying.
review 2: Some excellent stories make this a keeper, though some of them do fall flat. My favorites here were Quantum Theory and An Indian Soiree, both of which were 5-star stories. I also really liked the title story and The Presence of Men. The others, not so much, but
... moreon the whole, this was an impressive collection, and a wonderful introduction to this writer, whose other works I will have to look for. In particular, she does dialogue and scene really well, and her pacing is very good. In addition, I liked all of her endings, even for the stories I wasn't crazy about. less
