review 1: A huge Edith Wharton fan (who nevertheless failed to notice the dustjacket blurb heralding this as a retelling of "The Age of Innocence"), I loved this modern-day homage despite its occasional first-novel tendency toward too much telling and not enough showing. Segal's writing is elegant and clever and her love for Jewish culture, family and foibles is warm and generous. She creates a lovely, heartbreaking world here.
review 2: By the time I finished this book I had actually quite enjoyed it. But if I hadn't had to read it for bookclub, I wouldn't have persevered with it. I found the first part of the novel incredibly boring. Nothing much happens and I didn't really believe Adam's fascination with Ellie. It came to life for me towards the end, when things final
... morely started to happen. This is a book about the complexities of relationships and the decisions we all make in life. Is it better to live a good, honourable life which some may describe as"boring" but which brings its own, long term, rewards? Or should you "seize the day" and actually LIVE, even if that could lead to disaster? I know which I would choose, and I think that where you stand on this issue will affect how you feel about this book. I would have liked to give it three and a half stars, but I don't think I can do that? So three stars - two for the first part and four for the final third! less
