review 1: Francine Prose takes the reader on a wonderful journey through Paris during the 1930s. The protagonist ,Lou Villars, is an young woman, who ends up at The Chameleon Club. This club is known for its flamboyant shows and outrageous patrons. The reader learns about Lou's various escapades through the eyes of 4 distinctive characters. They are: Gabor, the Hungarian artist, Suzanne his girlfriend, the Baroness and Lionel, the disillusioned American writer. Prose is a gifted writer who captures the mood of Paris during the 30s. All in all a very imaginative story that takes the reader into the artistic community of Paris in the 30s.
review 2: I started this novel with a bit of trepidation that it might be a bit difficult to get through due to its subject matter
... more and some of the reader reviews I had read. To the contrary, this novel was an absolute pleasure to read. The structure, shifting between the perspectives of various characters, kept me from ever getting bored and rounded out many of the characters for me. For example, the Baroness was spoken of rather critically by a couple of other characters so I initially didn't like. When I read the chapters written from her perspective, she became a much more likable person and I could now understand the motives of her critics which enhanced my understanding of them as well. I wish more books were written using this multiple perspective device because, when done well as it was here, it really adds to the experience. less
