review 1: Quite possibly the worst comic ever created. The art is ugly. The characters are racist. The dialogue is full of hatred and vitriol. What once was a Batman story (which was canned due to what one assumes was good taste on the higher-ups' part), has been slightly tweaked to be a generic hero. Batman's ears have been shorn off of his cowl. Gordon's hair looks different. And Catwoman gets a mild uniform adjustment. Other than that, you are to assume that this is Batman. But thankfully, it isn't.No, Batman wouldn't go running across the planet killing people and thinking they deserved to die because they were from another country or had different religious beliefs. And I'd like to say that Batman wouldn't be in a story with such blocky, lazy, senses-abusive art.Frank Miller ... moreis a talented creator. And if you squint you can see his work and passion here. However, he has done much, much better work than this complete waste of paper. This isn't even bathroom-reading material. It's simply the low-level of the industry.
review 2: Holy Terror is a propaganda comic in which Frank Miller finally loses the grip on reality he's been threatening to completely dispense with for such a long time. Here, Islam is equated wholesale with Al-Qaeda in an us-or-them war of cultures. The plot is quite thin (terrorists explode nail bombs in New York, and a Batman figure tortures and kills those responsible) and all subtlety is jettisoned in reducing humans from characters to simply propaganda symbols - for example: a character has the star of David tattooed on his face and his name is David and he's an Israeli intelligence officer who is Not-Batman's ally against evil. I'm not sure what coherent message I'm meant to take away from a comic that cherry-picks an inflammatory quote from the Quran, entirely represents Islamic people as members of a barbaric, bloodthirsty Dark Age mentality, and then has a superhero representing the civilised US christian right retaliate with torture, cultural slurs, and killing, but I'm fairly sure what I left with isn't quite what Frank Miller intended. less
