review 1: More zombie fun in this alternative universe. This book focuses more on the villain side of the issue.Machine Man…er… Aaron is highlighted with his unique brand of humor. This book has some creative surprises but the gore and tasteless humor may be too much for some readers.NotesWelcome to Robot Heaven!Learning CurveModerate: New readers will likely be confused.
review 2: This book is kind of review-proof. It's just a big, ridiculous story about Machine Man (who you have probably never heard and neither had I) shooting a ton of Marvel Zombies a la Army of Darkness. He even uses a chainsaw arm at one point. There's a bit of a plot, but it's mostly in service of getting him from zombie deathmatch to zombie deathmatch, all featuring tons of Marvel D-listers that
... more haven't been in a major Marvel publication since like 1934.I will say, having Van Lente take over from Robert Kirkman's first two Marvel Zombies outings is a pretty fun switch. I think I may have actually enjoyed reading this goofball story more than Kirkman's slightly more serious (though never too serious) versions. Van Lente adds some really, really stupid visual humor and dialogue to his zombie-blasting that is right up my dumb alley. That said, what are these books? Why are they so popular that Marvel published a new one every year for something like 7 years? They're so silly and weird, it's insane to me that enough people were on board with them that they kept selling well. They aren't zombie stories. The zombies can all talk and think and plan and use their superpowers. They're just evil versions of superheroes that happen to look dead and bite people. I guess if you call something a zombie book people will buy it? Anyway, please look for my forthcoming textbook "Zombie Calculus: An Introduction to Derivatives and Braaaaaains." less
