review 1: Thriller fans of a certain age, in which category I include myself, Forsyth's latest, The Cobra, does not come anywhere near creating that same intensity. Its subject matter makes it quite compelling, though, and given Forsyth's skills at organizing his material, the novel is definitely worth your time.Forsyth opens full-throttle, beginning with a report by the head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, who has been roused out of bed in the opening of the novel by a president outraged after the grandson of a White House servant dies of a drug overdose. The Cobra of the title is an old-school intelligence field officer whom the president calls out of retirement to take charge of a massive drug-eradication program. With an unlimited budget, the Cobra sets out to do away with the ha... morendiwork of a major Mexican cartel and start a war among various African and European and U.S. kingpins in the trade. As the Cobra builds his small army and navy (and even smaller but deadly air force) in this ultimate war on drugs, the pages become more and more compelling.Forsyth has given us a full-fledged novel, some parts of which readers will find familiar if they read the good newspapers from around the world every day. It has the power of memorable intelligent entertainment about a moral plague and a debilitating social dilemma, second only to contemporary trafficking in its destructive force.
review 2: This was a rotten book; every possible sad old cocaine gang, south american corruption, cheap violence, subfusc ex-military takedown cliche was trotted out in a dreary series of low-action episodes culminating in a general failure of courage by cardboard leaders. A second-rate hash of acronyms and stale quasi-contemporaneous military tactical patterns is used to divert attention from the low quality plotline. It's like the cube root of a decent old Clancy novel from the far distant time when he actually wrote them himself. less

It was okay. a little preachy in the beginning. the second half was better.

Was pretty good, the ending was OK, but could've been better.
