review 1: Kamala Khan is your average 16 year old social misfit. She is really good when it comes to school and the intricacies of pop culture, but believes she does not fit in. Still learning how to manage her powers, after gaining the ability to shape-shift from the fog that descended upon the city, she slowly realizes that the outfit is not what gives heroes strength and courage. This is a prime example that graphic novels and comic books are becoming more diverse in their characters and characterizations. Kamala is a character that female readers will easily to relate to, due to her interests and social conventions. They were also able to make her the ordinary, hidden in the background 21st century female. The most poignant part is her realization that it is not the suit that giv... morees the heroes, like Thor, Ironman, or Captain Marvel, their strength but something else.
review 2: The second issue of Ms. Marvel shows her powers, and it shows her first act of heroism. And it's not a big act. She doesn't defeat a villain, or stop a crime, or anything like that. But it's still a powerful scene, especially as she recalls a verse from the Qu'ran: "Whoever kills one person, it is as if he has killed all mankind, and whoever saves one person, it is as if he has saved all of mankind." This is her "Great power" moment, and it's a powerful sentiment. The line is especially nice a touch as being a part of her faith. Being a Muslim doesn't define Kamala, but it is part of who she is, and it's cool to see that. The art is weird and trippy and a great match for the story. This is a great series, and the second issue is one of my favourite comic issues of the year. less
