review 1: I like any book about Hawaii and always want to move there when I read about it. That being said, this book was good but almost seemed "dumbed down" a bit for historical fiction. It reminded me more of books I've read for young adults and didn't really dive too deep into any particular persons ideas or mindset. I do appreciate it stayed true to facts and had a good story line. It was a worthwhile read, I just wanted a little more substance.
review 2: The reader will discover the caring, love, and intelligence the Hawaiian royalty had for their people. The reader will also discover how certain white men, hungry for power, living in Hawaii, caused enough drama and lies for years, that they managed to overthrow the monarchy. The final nail occurred when the U
... morenited States annexed Hawaii and the American flag was raised. This book was written as a novel. Most of the story was written with the voice of Laura Jennings, the daughter of white father and a Hawaiian mother. Her story, along with the Hawaiian royalty story, unravels to reveal the intrigue and truth about the overthrow of the monarchy. less

I liked how it incorporated Hawaiian history, but the story itself didn't really keep me interested.

Good history of how the US obtained Hawaii. Sad commentary on Missionaries and politics.
