review 1: After being impressed by Levine's previous two Disney Fairy titles, my 6-year-old and I had high hopes for the third in her series. My daughter didn't finish; I wouldn't have need to. The strength of the other titles was Levine's focus on the insecurities, temptations and imperfections of the fairies as they embark on quests that force them to make difficult moral decisions. In this book, the fairies are almost incidental. Here, Gwendolyn is a descendant of the original Wendy, and is waiting/hoping to be taken by Peter Pan to Neverland. She doesn't care much for Peter, even though she knows her family's history with the eternal boy. Instead, she dreams of meeting fairies. We see the entire adventure, then, through a set of self-centered Clumsy eyes, which robs the book of a... moreny intimacy. It's Gwendolyn who must make choices, and her lack of understanding of Neverland causes her to make many mistakes. On the surface, it sounds promising, but readers have no real reason to be interested in Gwendolyn. Like her, we are reading for the fairies. Including a brand-new human character as protagonist for the culmination of a trilogy pulled both my daughter and I out of the book. (She also was scared of the dragon.)
review 2: This was a great story. I loved that the main character was Gwendolyn and she is a "Clumsy" and the lots of great-granddaughter of Wendy Darling. I love that it brought together the new "Fairy Haven" and Tinkerbell stories and the original making it all feel like they were connected. My girls really loved the way Tink and Gwendolyn interacted. It was a once in a life time kind of adventure and we all loved the ride. less
