review 1: I wasn't expecting to like this, as I had not been able to finish "Sorry", but I did. Five Bells is a poetic, almost dream-like book that is dense yet light at the same time. I enjoyed the writing but not the characters, apart from Pei Xing who I felt had the most interesting story and had a bit more humanity about her, an interest in the world and the people in it beyond her own circle and experiences. The Pei Xing snippets left me wanting more, but I was happy to say goodbye to the others.
