review 1: Divorced Piper Prescott is getting ready for the grand opening of her new spice shop in Georgia. She's enlisted the local chef to do a cooking demo who ends up dead. The new police chief in town, Wyatt McBride, has Piper as suspect number one. It's up to Piper and her best friend Reba to clear her name. There was lots to like in this light hearted mystery. Piper is feisty and the cast of secondary characters were a hoot from Miss Melly, the prim and proper ex-mother-in-law to ex-husband C.J. Prescott and his younger girlfriend Amber aka Miss Peach Pit. The friendship between Piper and Reba is reminiscent of that between China Bayles and Ruby in Susan Wittig Albert's mysteries. There is the prerequisite love triangle that I did not find annoying. The biggest flaw w... moreas the ending. The murderer seemed to come out of no where and the motive behind it was a little slim. The rest of the book was so enjoyable, I was able to overlook that. I can't wait for the next in the series. It can only get better.
review 2: This is the first in what may be a new series by Gail Oust. Set in a small town in Georgia, our main character, Piper Prescott is making a new life for herself after her long marriage ends when she gets traded in for a new model. Starting up a shop called Spice it Up, she is getting ready for her grand opening when the chef who was do a cooking demo using spices from her shop turns up murdered. Piper is the one to discover the body and had unwittingly picked up the murder weapon. She becomes the main suspect. She and her best friend start nosing around trying to solve the case before Piper gets charged for the crime. Of course we have the triangle of interest here as in the tall, dark and handsome and gruff police chief, the boyish sweet town vet who saves her dog's life and Piper who stands in the middle. Even with this often used formula, the story stands well on its own, a fast paced read with plenty of interesting happenings. A good cozy read. less
