review 1: The editors of the stylish magazine Garden and Gun have published a book that is great fun to read and then send on to a good friend or three. I learned of it when I saw bourbon and honey-voiced writer Julia Reed (whose laugh should be named a National Treasurer) talking it up on the Morning Joe show on MSNBC. Short essays by Reed, John T. Edge, Roy Blount, Jr., Donovan Webster, chef John Currence and others dot sections on Food, Style, Drink, Sporting & Adventure, Home & Garden, and Arts & Culture. My favorite essay? Julia Reed's Secrets of a Southern Hostess, wherein she divulges a valuable nugget for guaranteeing a successful dinner party, one which I plan to employ on Christmas Eve. It's worth the price of the book for this essay alone. The Southerner's Handbook is the... more book equivalent to a generous slice of pecan pie with a solid shot of twenty-year-old Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve.
review 2: “The Southerner's Handbook” made by editors of the Garden & Gun magazine is their guide of secrets and advices for the good life living.Inside, reader can find many texts about living the modern life in the U.S. South relating to drinking, cooking recipes, eating, hunting, sports, gardening, home decoration, music, arts and many others. What’s the main feature of this book is the amount of information considering Southern way of life and due to a variety of topics from the kids’ entertainment, to the so-called men things like hunting up to the women activities like baking a cake it cannot be said that the book has a preference for any particular audience.Overall, this is a fun and informative book for those who live in the South to recall some memories and apply some of the things just read, and for all of us others who don’t live there to imagine what life is like in the South… less
