review 1: One of the things that none of the other comments have touched on (that I've seen at least) is that this book starts off EXACTLY the same way that Beau Geste does. There are a few minor differences e.g. magic, an extra brother in the mix, no romance... but the mysterious theft of a jewel when the lights go out and the blame being cast on the young folks is spot on. The young men in question even (drunkenly) talk about traveling and maybe joining the armed services! A clear nod/homage to a classic novel! However, in this story, Isobel is named Truthful and she is NOT going to sit on her rear and wait for the boyses to solve her issues. Instead, she goes about solving them herself while still playing the role of a dutiful young Edwardian/Victorian girl.I loved the idea of a ... morefemale protagonist in such a "macho" story, and while the book diverged into its own plot, the nod to Geste was appreciated. Nix is a first class author and I'll gladly read anything he writes. His "worst" fiction is better than half the "best" tripe they publish these days.
review 2: This was an absolute fun and light regency adventure with a dash of romance to keep the plot moving for the main leads. I would not have complained to see more development with the budding romance-from a bickering, cross banter to easy, open camaraderie into a stronger form of attraction. Granted, the pair's relationship throughout the story does go through all stages, however, it feels rushed towards the end as the conflict reaches its resolution. It seemed a tad all too sudden when Charles seemingly went from angry, I-was-deceived and helpless mode to a more traditional courteous suitor for our heroine. Nonetheless, it was more than enough to make this story quite an enjoyable read! less

I know this is a one-off, but I should like to hear more from these characters.

Liked, but I was distracted by too many spelling and grammar mistakes.
