review 1: Surviving quite literally an attack from the universe itself (he was hit by a meteor at the age of 10), Alex Woods leads a pretty unique life. His mother runs a shop as a fortune teller, his father is unknown, and his cat is a reproduction factory. As a result of the meteor attack, Alex suffers from epilepsy, this plus his family life, and his great interest in learning stuff does not make him one of the popular guys at school. After being chased by his bullies, Alex ends up in the garden shed of Mr Peterson. An unlikely friendship starts off after he is forced to spend some Saturdays with this ill-tempered, reclusive widower. With its ups and downs, the two form a tight bond. Probably tighter than anyone could ever get.The Universe Versus Alex Woods is a wonderful novel ... moreabout a powerful journey. We start at the ending after which Alex takes us back to the beginning... well, one of the many he could have picked. The story is extremely organized, which makes it a breeze to read. Everything is in order, links are explained before jumping to another subject. You might even start to wonder if Alex isn't also an autistic person. I cannot really say more about it as it is just a great book that everyone should read (I for one will force it onto everyone I know...). The theme is, I think, really rare and probably even rarer is the way Gavin Extence decided to write about it. It is definitely a controversial one, but if you read the story you might look at it differently than you would before. I highly recommend reading it, and Extence is working on his second novel which will be released somewhere in March 2015. I am really looking forward to that!
review 2: I absolutely LOVED this book! Wasn't sure at first, picked it up because it promised to be funny and light-hearted. It was, but so much more. Alex's story starts when he suffers a brain injury as a result of being hit by a meteorite, he is ten yrs old standing in his own bathroom when this unlikely event occurs. Alex's Mom is unique, he has no idea who his father is. And so it goes. I'm inspired to break out my old copy of Breakfast of Champions, Kurt Vonnegut is a huge influence. Gavin Extence has a winner in this debut novel! less
