review 1: This was a good read. It would be good for an emotionally mature child, teen, or adult. The reason I say emotionally mature is because the young girl in the book finds that her mother is very flawed in some ways and not right about everything and while that is true of every parent and person, a less emotionally mature child would interpret that wrongly. It was a very good story told about a family going through the trials of the Depression. I enjoyed it very much.
review 2: I'm not entirely sure what to make of this book. The writing was realistic and engaging as was the story. Ester's family definitely illustrates the scenario lived by many during the depression, and how helpless even the adults felt in the face of difficult times. As an adult I could see
... moresome of the motivation behind Mama's behavior, but I'm not sure it will be as accessible to middle grade readers. That being said, fans of Jennifer Holms' historical fiction (Turtle in Paradise) will enjoy getting to know Esther and her family. less
