review 1: Fun, fun, fun!! Imagine you are a parolee moving to a random town and finding a big abandoned house with some squatters. You have no money and decide to squat yourself. You start taking care of the place, because you are a nice guy (maybe) and think you can make an arrangement with the real estate company: you will take care of the house and get to live there for free. And then you meet the relevant person and find out that that the deed to the house is in your name! How nice! Or is it? What a fun premise. I really enjoyed this book which created an alternative universe, in which cell phones work no matter where you are. So, you are in faerie fighting werewolves and all of a sudden your cell phone rings and you have to deal with stuff from the "real" world. All the fightin... moreg stops while you talk on the cell phone. And then the vampire gets trapped in a box with a cell phone of a real estate agent... Don't get me wrong, this is not a one gag book. I just found these bits hilarious. I am not really sure what happened at the end, there are so many identical twins and mistaken identities (and that is why 4 not 5 stars), but is sure was a lot of fun!! I haven't read anything else by this author, but he does have a great sense of humor.
review 2: Epistolary tale about a genteel middle aged ne'er do well who comes into possession of a house that turns out to be a gate to Faerie--a beautiful but dangerous place with particularly savage magical residents. I appreciated the tale for being well written and stocked with complex characters (also stocked with twins, family mysteries, humorous relations with the opposite sex [the protagonist is evidently irresistible to women], hapless victims with body parts remnoved and massive amounts of treasure), but for some reason didn't really LIKE it...maybe because it seemed a little too slow and dreamy? Very accomplished work, though. less
