The Chronicles of Egg
review 1: Okay, I say this nearly every time I read a series, but I am going to start finishing them completely before recommending them- at least to younger audiences. I really liked Egg and his friends and read the whole series within a week. Book Three, “Blue Sea Burning” does not disappoint, there is still action and fun with all of the characters you come to love and lots of pirate battle scenes. The end goes a little crazy, but in a middle grade book- its totally okay. The thing is, there are some deep themes in this book that I think parents should definitely be aware of! Some of them I agree with, and some so deeply oppose my worldview that it took this series off of my “read to my girls as soon as they will sit still” to a “wait until they are in high school and... more use it for a deeper conversations” Series. Some themes are:1. The world’s not black and white- people are capable of great things and terrible things. 2. Family can look many different ways- and friends are sometimes closer than family. And then the one I can’t get my head to accept:3. People save people- not God or faith. Now, maybe the author isn’t saying all of that- but it’s what I got from the book. (No, I wasn’t looking to read this as a philosophical text, I was just in it for a pirate romp so I don’t think I am making more of it than was there.) Spoilers below: Seriously you have been warned, but also, it’s good to know if you are concerned with theme 3.After getting the map translated, this is the last bit of the wording “This we sear as truth: the man who seeks rescue from gods will die in bitterness. Neither Ka, nor Ma, will save him. The only savior of man is man.” (p. 190)As a Christian, this goes completely against everything I believe and I wish the author hadn’t thrown it in there. (I don’t know if it was just casual or the reason for writing the book) I think it can open the door to good conversations, but parents be aware. After this, egg and his friends seek to free the Okalu slaves and there isn’t any supernatural interventions at all. The good parts are, we see kids being brave and risking their lives for other people because if they don’t do it, no one and nothing will. I want brave kids who take responsibility for the world they live in, but not out of despair and little to no help- but from faith and love. Yes, that’s a lot for a book… yes, I am likely making more of it than was intended, but it is so contrary to my faith that I can't ignore it or read past it without comment.
review 2: The Chronicles of Egg #3: Blue Sea Burning by Geoff Rodkey. I loved theses books from the beginning, and I'm both sad and happy it's over. Happy because it had a happy ending, and Egg can relax and finally be a kid again, but also sad because I don't want it to be over. this was a really good conclusion to the Chronicles of Egg trilogy. It had a good beginning, it was well written, and it was a great, funny, swashbuckling adventure, that I am so glad I could be apart of. This book is beyond a page turner! It's plot was excellent, it's characters amazing, and it's dialogue hilarious, especially the beginning of chapter 32. It had a really good ending. He tied up all the knots, and everything fit together nicely. I did feel a little sorry for Egg in the end, with what was gonna happen with Guts, Kira, and then Millicent, but it had a good massage behind it. Thing's can't stay the same forever, we all have to take our separate ways at one point or another. Lease, that was the message I got out of it. It was a good lesson, and an amazing story, with a great ending. The book was a little stressful, but the fact that it was funny as hell, helped make up for the stress. My favorite character was Guts, there was always something funny coming out of his mouth, foul or not. I do say, I wasn't sure about Burn Healy at first, but towards the end, he was really growing on me. I loved this book, and all the one's before it in the series, and I think everyone should read them. I'm going to give it a 9.5, please read it. You won't regret it. less
