review 1: Read this aloud to my nine-year-old daughter, who, every time I announced that I was done reading for the night, told me that I must read more or she would kill me. The story concerns young Egbert (who prefers to be called Egg) who lives on the island of Deadweather with his father and two older mean siblings. When the family travels to the neighboring island of Sunrise (which is much nicer and not so infested with pirates), events take a dramatic turn for Egg. He's soon pining away for the spunky Millicent (about his age, 13, and much richer) and then on the run for his life. This story grabbed me from the get-go and I enjoyed reading it to my daughter who would often chuckle at some of the developments. This is fun yarn with pirates and young kids in trouble. We'll be r... moreeading part two of this trilogy next.
review 2: This is a fun series. If you liked Percy Jackson, then this is right up your alley. I like it better in fact. It's funnier and because it isn't really a fantasy (it involves pirates with everyday rules) the author can get away without the need to build up a huge new world and that the rules that entails. (My main complaint with the Percy Jackson series was that it wasn't done enough, given all that it could have been)This story is action-packed, funny, and honest. The author isn't crass at all, but there is a definite edge I think most middle reader authors shy away from. He isn't afraid to talk about liking a girl, or fighting with your best friend (whose name is guts, and yes, he did just try to kill you back there, but now you both are good)and I love it for that.Definitely recommend this one! less
