review 1: There isn't a lot of baseball in this "baseball" book by George Will. It is merely a collection of other people's thoughts on Wrigley Field, the Cubs, and baseball, as well as religion, society and more. In other words, there's a lot of George Will in this book.Nice Little Place tracks the history of the Cubs and Wrigley Field through this meandering journey. Will attempts to explain the phenomenon of Wrigley Field and the Cubs' long running failures between the lines. Will posits, and quotes others who share his opinion, that the Cubs have made Wrigley itself the star attraction, rather than the product on the field. Because of this, the Cubs have thrived in spite of their failure to win, where other teams would have suffered.I really enjoyed Men at Work, a "baseball" boo... morek Will wrote in the late 80s. There was a lot more baseball in that one. And more of Will's own writing, which is rather enjoyable. 3 stars might even be a little generous.
review 2: This book is entertaining for all baseball fans, not just Cub fans. Little known facts (that even die-hard Cub fans probably don't know about) are revealed and the history of Wrigley Field is not just a history of a place, but it is used as a backdrop to explain how the bond between a sports team and the fans in its city, as well as the in the country. Will displays his mastery of language by using a play on words to provide constant, and touching, humor. less
