review 1: Maybe because author George O'Connor admits Hera is his favorite goddess, did I find this installment of the Olympians Series the best so far. It is refreshing to see Hera not only as a jealous wife, but instead as a complex female goddess. I really appreciate the author's notes at the end of each volume as O'Connor takes the reader through why he chose to explore some parts of a myth or delve into unknown parts of a hero, or even his own interpretation of the information as we know it through ancient art and oral tradition. I think that students would relate well with these texts and the character profiles included at the end of each as they closely mimic the superhero style that has been popular for decades. I use these texts in my grade 11 class as supplementary materia... morels for students creating their own god profiles, but I think they'd make a great class read with a grade 6/7 being first introduced to mythology. For those of us who have a little backgroungd in the classic myths, there are a lot of little treats within these stories, and for those reading the whole series, the links between each book create something cohesive and fun to follow.
review 2: The graphic novel Hera: The Goddess and her Glory by George O’Connor is a simple and intriguing novel pertaining to Greek mythology. It depicts the life of Hera specifically, the wife of Zeus, and the goddess of women and marriage. It illustrates her life from before she was “queen” to well in her reign. Even though most of the novel pertains to her life, Hercules and his life- risking “labors” to please Hera are also a prominent part of the novel’s plot. Hera gives Hercules 10 extremely difficult challenges, like killing the Hydra of Lerna and destroying the Stymphalian birds, and if he is willing to surpass them only then will he be able to gain Hera’s approval and liking as a person. In this comic book, the characters looked like regular cartoon humans. They had hair and wore clothing, and there was just enough detail to show that they were quite realistic. The eyes of the characters however were quite different, as they were circular shape, and the eyelashes weren’t defined. Another unrealistic feature were the teeth as they were expressed in thick white lines. The setting and background weren’t that detailed, however it was still obvious to know what was what. The illustrations in this novel were done by ink, and therefore the artist used different effects to portray different things and that is why there were some aspects with not a lot of detail. Many colors were used in this, especially paler colors. Darker colors were used when necessary and more specifically during the scenes of Hercules’s adventures, however other than that they weren’t present. Overall I definitely recommend this novel. It was cute and short, yet interesting at the same time. I recommend this novel to anyone who likes Greek mythology or is interested in it, because that is the main focus of this story. Also I recommend this novel to anyone that is interested in Greek mythology, because through reading this, one can receive some knowledge regarding it especially regarding Hera, one of the eminent goddesses on Mount Olympus. Moreover, I think anyone interested in Greek culture in general would like this novel, as Greek mythology plays a major role in their history, and in general it is what many people associate with when thinking of Greece. Lastly, I recommend this novel to anyone of any age group, because it is not hard to understand what is going on, and anyone at any age could enjoy this. less
